Experimental Evidence (concept proof) for the optical switch invented by Nimrod Moiseyev & Ilya Vorobeichik, & Meir Orenstein (Founders of OpTun Ltd.)

This video was taken by Rosenblum Gershon who led the experimental development of new type of optical devices for communication in OpTun Ltd.

In the video we see how a propagated light in one wave guide is transferred almost completely to another waveguide by warming the two waveguides to slightly varying their index of refraction.

The mechanism was discovered due to the mathematical similarities between the Schrödinger equation and the scalar maxwell equation where time in Schrödinger equation is equivalent to propagation length in optics.

In quantum mechanics the ground energy level in one potential well splits into two energy levels in double well potential. In optics the single mode waveguide split into two modes (symmetric and antisymmetric modes) in the two coupled waveguides.

The energy splitting determines the time it takes for a particle (electron in quantum mechanics and a photon in optics) to tunnel through the potential barrier from one well to another. By tuning the laser parameters to couple one of the two almost degenerated energy levels to another level which is above the potential barrier, the energy splitting between the two initially almost degenerated levels is substantially increased. Thereby, the time it takes for the electron to tunnel through the potential well to another is reduced substantially as well.  As long as the laser is on the electron oscillated from one well to another.

Similarly, by varying periodically the index of refraction in the two waveguides along the propagation axis the optical particle (photon) will oscillates between the two waveguide as it is clearly seen in the video and explained in the paper Vorobeichik, I., Narevicius, E., Rosenblum, G., Orenstein, M., & Moiseyev, (2003). Experimental evidence for the optical mode which is mutual to the two coupled waveguides which are used for the new type of optical switch invented by Nimrod Moiseyev & Ilya Vorobeichik, & Meir Orenstein (Founders of OpTun Ltd.)

In the video we see that indeed we were able to produce coupled two waveguides that beside the optical mode that is used for the communication there is another mode which is mutual to the two waveguides and is used to speed the transition of light from one waveguide to another by many order of magnitudes. See explanation in the caption of the video given above and, in the paper, Vorobeichik, I., Narevicius, E., Rosenblum, G., Orenstein, M., & Moiseyev, (2003).
